Step 2CK este, la fel ca Step 1, un examen ce se desfasoara pe parcursul unei zile. In cele 9 ore de examinare veti avea de rezolvat 8 blocuri a cate 40 de intrebari in 60 de minute (8 ore), 15 minute sunt alocate unul scurt tutorial si restul de 45 de minute le puteti folosi pentru pauze. Examenul se sustine in centrele prometric din toata lumea.
Subiectele testate se impart intre 7-8 zone de interes si reprezinta o extindere a cunostintelor de baza acumulate pentru Step 1.
Ajunsi in anul 6, cei mai multi dintre voi poate se intreaba de unde incep munca de planificare, cercetare si elaborare a lucrarii de diploma.
Cu siguranta acest ghid este unul succint, insa sper sa ofere un mic ajutor celor care nu stiu de unde sa inceapa.
Etapele ulterioare elaborarii lucrarii de licenta incep prin alegerea unei TEME.
Tema este greu de ales in cazul in care nu sunteti familiarizati pana in prezent cu unul dintre obiectele de studiu in domeniul caruia ati lucrat in plus sau nu aveti un mentor care sa va indrume.
Primul pas: gasesti un indrumator, fie ca este un cadru didactic cu care te-ai familiarizat la unul dintre stagii, fie ca reprezinta un model pentru viitoarea ta cariera, cu siguranta el iti va oferi indrumarea necesara in alegerea temei sau iti va propune cateva teme pe care le considera potrivite/ de actualitate/ adecvate domeniului in care activeaza (un proiect in cadrul sectiei, care poate fi extins/ o tema care nu a fost abordata pana in momentul respectiv/ o tema pentru care vei gasi suficiente informatii in clinica, etc.)
O data aleasa tema, urmatoarea etapa consta in stabilirea unui cuprins sau a directiei pe care o va urma lucrarea ta de licenta. O sugestie ar fi sa evidentiezi ce iti doresti sa afli de la studiul tau (concluziile). De cele mai multe ori, stabilirea concluziilor te va ajuta sa construiesti tintit cuprinsul lucrarii, astfel incat aceasta sa fie una de calitate, concisa si timpul pentru elaborarea ei sa fie optim folosit, evitand situatii neplacute in care trebuie sa refaci capitole intregi sau sa schimbi tema cu totul.
O colaborare stransa intre tine si indrumatorul tau va fi cheia unei lucrari de licenta reusite. Acesta te va asista in alegerea bibliografiei, metodelor de cercetare si a celorlalte resurse folosite. Un plan bun te va salva in momentele de impas din timpul redactarii.
Ca si resurse indispensabile, te sfatuiesc sa te adresezi bibliotecii facultatii tale. In cazul facultatii de medicina a Universitatii „Carol Davila” biblioteca iti ofera resurse actualizate si acces la zeci de site-uri cu articole de specialitate (gratuit – in baza permisului de biblioteca).
Pentru mine biblioteca reprezinta si astazi (rezident fiind) cea mai importanta sursa pentru cercetare si documentare. Va recomand sa o folositi ori de cate ori aveti nevoie sa elaborati lucrari stiintifice/articole/proiecte de cercetare pentru ca va ofera acces la articole de cea mai buna calitate. Cele mai multe resurse disponibile in biblioteca virtuala necesita taxe considerabile pentru acces.
Accesul la cele mai noi studii din domeniu, cat si usurinta cu care poti consulta baza de date de acasa fac din biblioteca virtuala un instrument indispensabil studentilor, rezidentilor si medicilor.
Pentru obtinerea datelor de acces ale contului trebuie sa trimiti un e-mail pe adresa firstname.lastname@example.org care sa contina codul de bare de pe cardul de biblioteca, numele si prenumele, numarul matricol si facultatea.
I begin by thanking all of my colleagues and readers for the good toughts about this blog. A few changes will take place after May 9 2016. Some of them will change the scenario a bit more then others.
For example, instead of the 308 questions, test takers will have to respond only to 280 in the same allotted time for each block (60 minutes). This means that you will have more time to answer the questions (40 questions/ block) but it will not impact scores.
This is due to the procedure of scoring on the USMLE Step 1. NBME clearly states that:
USMLE weights all multiple choice questions equally within each Step exam. Thus, answering relatively easy questions or relatively difficult questions correctly provides equal progress toward meeting the minimum passing score. This urban myth may derive from a misunderstanding about the statistical methods called equating that ensure that the 3-digit score is comparable regardless of what test form or what time of year a candidate tests. The statistical processes make small adjustments to scores achieved on test forms that contain relatively more or less difficult items. Scores on tests with relatively difficult items are adjusted up and those achieved on relatively easy items are adjusted down. These adjustments ensure that the scores that are awarded are comparable regardless of the particular combination of items on any examinee’s test form and ensures fairness for all test takers.
Some other changes include: text magnification and reverse color feature or image magnification when you click images and graphs.

I am up and running with my daily schedule and I found some time to write a small update.
Here are some advice for your difficult periods when you are studying .
Try to keep going and stay calm, focus only on your next step. Exercise and enjoy some free time also, it is as important as studying.
Besides the importance of a dedicated study time, more important I find the way I study. Here are my tips in how to tackle the vast resources at hand for the USMLE Step 1.
– do not focus on details when you start reviewing a subject. Read it from a single source and capture the „big picture”. Understand it superficially and do not try to memorize all the small pieces that make up the big mechanisms (you will do that after you comprehend the basics regarding it). Go from BIG pieces to SMALLER and smaller ones until you master them all.
– memorization. I do not know if it`s your style or not but it is unlikely to work for this exam. To put things into perspective, let`s say, for example, you only relay on Kaplan Lecture Notes and you will have ~3500 pages to memorize. If you can do it, go for it, but somewhere along the way things will become unclear and you will be prone to errors. Even the quintessential First Aid has more then 650 pages and even learning it by heart can`t get you a high score. [remember that the mean score is 230 – we (IMG`s) need more]
– instead, concentrate on learning the mechanisms behind everything and what you add afterwards will have a different feel. things will add up and become more clear.
– I am not saying that parts of anatomy do not have to be memorized but let`s think for example at the vascularization. If you know embryology you will know then why duodenal ulcers erode into the gastroduodenal artery or why testicular cancers are associated with para-aortic adenopathies, not with inguinal ones (they descend from the abdomen to their final position in the scrotum). Combine memorization with understanding because they complement each other and help you reduce the things that you will have to memorize (like chromosomes/genes and enzymes – who remembers them from the beginning?)
– the best way to quantify your progress is by using a Qbank, and I am sure that any one of the main choices (Elsevier, Kaplan or Usmle World) is good for this job. I use UWorld and not only that I find it useful as a mean of checking my daily progress but it offers reliable information also thru it`s answers so I don`t need to check my notes for explications every time.
-if you are like me and basic sciences were so far away when you started accumulating the clinical based way of thinking just start with them. You know that Biochemistry, Genetics, Immunology and Pharmacology where hard topics to master then, but now you will feel more ” acquainted ” with their role. START from the basics.
To finish it up the most important thing about preparing for almost any exam is that the amount of reading you put into it correlates with your final score so the more you read the more you get!
More then a year has passed from my first post about the journey into my MD career, some things stayed the same, some changed but one thing remained unaccomplished. I haven`t retaken my USMLE Step 1 and now is the time .
I have finished medical school, passed my final thesis examination and obtained a spot as a general surgery resident. All in all it was a good year but somethings remain unchanged, I still have the drive to continue my medical training in the US, and above all the things taken into consideration up to now this represents a challenge that I want to overcome. To take hold of the knowledge that I think I lost on my way towards my final year as a medical student (integration of all that I have studied, a review of the last 6 years).
So here are the facts. I am in the process of studying for STEP 1, and I have exactly 90 days for this. I aim at a score of 240 from the alloted 308 test questions and I`m readier then ever to fulfill this goal.
I will start writing about my program and resources I use in a step by step fashion, a journal for everyone that would find this useful.
After my credentials arrive (more on the subject of Graduate credentials in a future post) and are proccesed by ECFMG I will be able to program my examination day (28 April is my preferred day). This gives me approximately 80 days to go until D-day.
I am optimistic and focused on the job at hand and I hope I will not embarrass myself (me being my biggest critic) :).
After this long „break” I will get started in my next post by presenting you some new resources that I have been using for the past weeks which I find useful.

The number of questions for the USMLE Step 1 dropped from 322 to 308:
Step 1 is a one-day examination. The testing day includes 308 multiple-choice items divided into 7 blocks of 44 items; 60 minutes are allotted for completion of each block of test items. On the test day, examinees have a minimum of 45 minutes of break time and a 15- minute optional tutorial. The amount of time available for breaks may be increased by finishing a block of test items or the optional tutorial before the allotted time expires. (http://www.usmle.org/step-1/)
This means that you have 1 minute and 36 seconds to solve each question of the allotted 44 questions. As I have already mentioned, timing is key on your USMLE Step 1 Exam, as for every other questions based examinations that you will take during your career.
